Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp stresses importance of continuity after low-key transfer window

Jurgen Klopp insists continuity can help drive Liverpool’s title challenge this season after a quiet transfer window at Anfield.

The Reds, who kick off their campaign against Norwich on Friday evening, made just three additions to their squad this summer: teenagers Sepp van den Berg and Harvey Elliott, as well as back-up goalkeeper Adrian.

But Klopp believes that could prove to be a positive for a team who picked up their first trophy together in winning the Champions League.

“I really think big teams of the past - and I don’t say we are a big team now, that will be decided in a couple of years - they stay together for a number of years,” said the German.

“They do not need a lot of changes. Do me a favour when I say this, because I am not comparing us with Barcelona of five, six, seven years ago, but they stayed together.

"Man United had the class of ’92. How long did they stay together? They changed a couple of strikers, but you do not change completely.”

A 97-point haul was not enough for Liverpool to clinch the title last term, with Manchester City finishing a point ahead to retain their crown.

However, Klopp is not interested in drawing comparisons with 2018-19.

“The only thing we know at the moment is that nothing will happen for us in a positive direction if we don’t win our games,” he added.

“We have to start with that on Friday and don’t have to think too much about what will happen for the rest of the season.”

Norwich could not have asked for a more difficult start to their first top-flight campaign since relegation in 2016, but manager Daniel Farke is excited by the challenge that awaits at Anfield and feels his team’s naivety could even help them thrive.

“I had a little smile when I saw our first game,” said the German. “Our lack of Premier League experience could be a positive. I want my players to be brave and enjoy playing.”
