Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp sent Bukayo Saka transfer message as Arsenal contract talks continue

Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman says it would be a "no brainer" to sign Bukayo Saka from Arsenal, if he becomes available on a free transfer.

The teenager has risen to prominence this season at Arsenal, with Saka impressing at left-back in recent weeks in Mikel Arteta's side.

Saka has 18 months left to run on his first professional contract at Arsenal and, as football.london revealed in June, he is a long-standing target of Borussia Dortmund. He has also been linked to Manchester United and Liverpool.

For their part Arsenal are understood to be optimistic that the 18-year-old will agree new terms that will see him receive a significant increase on his current £7,000-a-week salary.

Arsenal transfer window verdict

But McManaman has delivered his verdict on Liverpool being interested in the 18-year-old, who has said he is unfazed by speculation over his future as contract talks continue with Arsenal, with the former Reds winger having a message for boss Jurgen Klopp.

“He looks like a really good player, but he’s incredibly young," he said, in his column for HorseRacing.net.

“If there are contract issues and he ever becomes available on a free transfer then that’s a no brainer because you’re taking someone on a free contract who’s young and has a lot of potential.

“If he continues his development at left-back, then he’s not as good as Andy Robertson at the moment.

“If he does join Liverpool then he’s got a long wait and Liverpool already have a couple of young left-backs waiting in the wings who we’ve seen in the FA Cup this year, who would probably be on a par with Bukayo Saka at this moment in time.

“It all depends on numerous things such as economics and whether it’s a deal that Liverpool thinks is worth doing. They may think that it’s a deal not necessarily in need, but they may do it anyway.”
