Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp sends cheeky message to Pep Guardiola ahead of Champions League final

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has sent a cheeky message to Manchester City counterpart Pep Guardiola ahead of the Champions League final.

The Reds were narrowly beaten to the Premier League title by City earlier this month despite claiming a club record total of 97 points.

While City's season is now over, Liverpool are preparing for the Champions League final on Saturday in Madrid against Tottenham Hotspur, who eliminated the Etihad side in the quarter-finals.

Klopp has now reached three European Cup finals since Guardiola last featured in the showpiece occasion when guiding Barcelona to 3-1 victory over Manchester United at Wembley in 2013.

Guardiola – whose side also won the League Cup and FA Cup this season to become the first to claim the domestic treble – has previously stated he regards the Premier League the more important trophy.

Everything Jurgen Klopp said in his Champions League final press conference

And when reminded of this, Klopp said: “That is how it is. Pep has that to say probably because he was not in Champions League final for a while!

“Don’t get it wrong, we all know he is the best manager in the world and he deserves all the praise he gets. But if you ask me the question as Liverpool manager, I have to say the Premier League (is the more important).

“People say it is the Premier League and we have to say that because we tried everything. We want to go as far as possible, that means we want to win that.

“I heard that Pep said people will only see him as a success if he wins the Champions League – it shows how luxurious the problems he has are!

“During the season we have to fight against them for the Premier League title and there is another competition.

"This year we were a little bit better than them in the Champions League.”
