Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp reveals what the future holds for Xherdan Shaqiri after goal against Everton

Jurgen Klopp has hinted that Xherdan Shaqiri's performance in the 5-2 win over Everton will be rewarded with more appearances for Liverpool going forward.

Shaqiri marked his first start since the 4-0 win over Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final in May with an eye-catching display against the Blues in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday night.

The Switzerland international poked home Sadio Mane's through ball to make it 2-0 on the night and wowed the Kop in the second half with a string of flicks and tricks as Liverpool hammered their local rivals.

Shaqiri was one of five changes in total for the game against Marco Silva's side and Klopp said the display gave him plenty to ponder as he plots his way through a busy month of football for his title-chasing squad.

“He scored one goal, and it was exactly the same as with Divock. He looked completely fresh, physically strong," Klopp said.

“It's important players train after they are injured. He had twice this calf thing this season.

“He is back in training a couple of weeks, completely normal, understood the situation in the squad.

“When you win a lot of games you don’t make 20 changes but this period you need all the boys. I hope they will be in the shape of Shaq or Divock or Adam tonight.

“It gives us the feeling we can do it more often, and we will do it more often. Incredible performance, his set-pieces were outstanding. There is more to follow.”

Liverpool's comfortable win saw them re-establish their eight-point lead at the summit of the Premier League after Leicester head beaten Watford at home earlier in the evening.
