Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp reveals what Mohamed Salah told him about West Ham penalty incident

Jurgen Klopp admits he cannot understand criticism of Mohamed Salah over his penalty against West Ham United - and revealed the player picked up an injury during the incident.

Salah was awarded a spot kick shortly before half-time of Saturday's Premier League clash at Anfield having been kicked in the foot by Hammers defender Arther Masuaku.

The decision of referee Kevin Friend was then verified by VAR official Chris Kavanagh, with Salah then netting the penalty to equalise as Liverpool went on to win 2-1.

West Ham manager David Moyes later suggested it was the wrong call and accused the Reds striker of going to ground too easily, with Salah also being criticised heavily in parts of the media.

And bemused Liverpool boss Klopp said: "What can I say? It was a foul, for pretty much everybody who saw the situation.

"Believe it or not, yesterday morning I spoke to Mo about how he feels, and he has exactly three proper knocks on the foot - and one of them is from the penalty situation.

"That's how it is. He has a knock. You go down or not, whatever, sometimes the refs whistle it.

"We don't talk that long about penalties we don't get, to be honest, in other games.

"Now two days later we are still talking about this penalty. There was clear contact. I don't understand the criticism."
