Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp responds to Real Madrid backlash over 'strange' stadium comment

Jurgen Klopp has responded to criticism from Real Madrid after there was backlash to comments he made following Liverpool's 3-1 defeat in Spain last week.

With the Santiago Bernabeu currently undergoing renovations, the Champions League quarter-final first leg between the two side's took place at the La Liga giants' stadium - Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano.

The Reds boss was unimpressed with the ground, which is where Real Madrid Castilla play their home games, and was heard to say: "This is a training ground. It's as if we visited Manchester United and played at their training ground," before the first leg in Madrid.

Meanwhile, he also gave another mention to the ground following the final whistle after Liverpool's defeat.

"It must be a really tricky task for Real Madrid at Anfield," Klopp said.

"This was strange tonight because it was really difficult with the stadium (at Madrid's training ground) but Anfield is at least a proper stadium and it will be good for us."

But after widespread backlash in Spain, including both Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane and Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman, who accused the German of being disrespectful, Klopp has moved to clarify his original comments.

"I didn't want to be disrespectful. If they think that is the stadium they should play in, that's completely fine for me," the German said. "They played the whole season in it. I know the situation. It's all fine but making a story about what I said is a real joke.

"If somebody thought I was disrespectful: sorry. It was not my intention."
