Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp 'proved right' over Burnley comments after Ashley Barnes incident

Ashley Barnes caught the attention of Jurgen Klopp when Liverpool hosted Burnley last week - and the forward produced a display against Leeds on Sunday that is being talked about again.

Barnes and his strike partner Chris Wood were namechecked by the Reds boss post-match after his side’s 2-0 win, much to the annoyance of Burnley manager Sean Dyche.

“You saw these challenges of Barnes and Wood on Virgil (van Dijk) and Joel (Matip)”, said Klopp .

“I am not 100% sure if we are going in the right direction with these decisions, if we go 10-15 years back. It is too dangerous – it is just hard. The rules are how they are but you cannot defend these situations.”

There was plenty of debate as to how accurate Klopp's comments were, following the Liverpool match.

However, Barnes arguably helped to emphasise the German coach’s point against Leeds today - as he launched into a late tackle on Stuart Dallas, which earned him a yellow card.

The offside flag was delayed as Chris Wood forced a save from Illan Meslier, before Barnes jumped into a high challenge on full-back Dallas inside the Leeds box.

Burnley's more aggressive style has been an ongoing discussion after Klopp suggested fans that enjoy their playing style “watch wrestling" instead.

Here is what football fans have been saying on social media today - with plenty suggesting the Liverpool manager has been 'proved right':

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness gave his take on Burnley during the Sky coverage earlier on - suggesting their way of playing is necessary for the team to compete.

“They’ve been aggressive. It looks ugly but that’s how defending has to be, you see Arsenal [yesterday] not touch tight, but today the players are up for a tussle”, Souness told Sky Sports at half-time.

“No idea why the flag doesn’t go up, if it goes up [for Wood offside] Barnes wouldn’t get a yellow card.

"I’m not advocating that tackle it’s late and endangering the opponent.”

Despite the delay from the official allowing the challenge to happen, Leeds may feel they should have been playing against ten men for the second-half, with the two sides playing out a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor.
