Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on why he had a pint in one of Merseyside's most iconic pubs

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has appeared in a beer advert staged at one of Merseyside's most iconic pubs.

The Reds boss has been announced as the new ambassador for ERDINGER Weissbräu, Germany’s largest privately owned wheat beer brewery.

The partnership was announced at the 80th birthday party of the brewery’s owner, Werner Brombach, with Klopp conveying birthday wishes via live video streaming from his Merseyside home.

A picture was also released of Klopp enjoying a pint of ERDINGER Weissbräu, who have previously partnered with Franz Beckenbauer and FC Bayern Munich, at the Dovedale Towers on Penny Lane, one of Liverpool's most well-known and iconic pubs.

'The Dovey', as it is known locally, was originally called Grove House and served a variety of purposes including being an orphanage before becoming a venue known as 'Barneys' during World War Two, hosting dances and balls for locals and visiting troops.

John Lennon and Paul McCartney played the venue several times with The Quarrymen in 1957 and Queen singer Freddie Mercury, then known as Farrouk Bulsara, lived in one of the upstairs rooms in the late 1960s.

Speaking about the partnership, Klopp said: “When we first got to know each other, I quickly realised that ERDINGER’s owner Werner Brombach was an inspirational guy.

"We had an instant understanding and shared many of the same views on respecting and motivating those around us. We have a passion for quality and hard work, encouraging talent and single-mindedly pursuing our objectives whilst recognising the importance of a balanced lifestyle and enjoyment of our surroundings.

"Our mindset is positive and very similar, and I think we’re going to have a lot of fun working together here in the UK.”

Mike Girling from the Dovedale Towers said: "Erdinger approached us to use the Dovey for the adverts as it’s such an iconic and interesting pub and truly representative of a classic Scouse local.

"We’ve been used for filming before, Mo Salah and Brian Blessed and others both filmed high profile adverts here in the last few years.

"Jurgen was exactly as you’d expect, incredibly friendly with no airs and graces, he treated everyone with respect and was very funny.

"Everyone, cast and crew alike loved him and he loved the Dovey."

Klopp's title-chasing Reds are back in action on Saturday lunchtime when they take on Bournemouth at Anfield in the Premier League.
