Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp no fan of Christmas period tradition as ‘crazy’ fixtures begin to pile up

Jurgen Klopp has admitted his worry that players will fall foul of the upcoming Christmas period.

Although the Liverpool boss is reluctant to rotate his team at this stage of the month, he fears mounting injuries during the final week of the year, with January “no better”.

“Players’ welfare is important but we’re used to a tough schedule,” he said. “I don’t think we need to make too many changes at the start of December.

“Maybe the middle or the end but it’s about constant conversations with the fitness and medical department. We use all our data for the line-up.

“December will always be crazy. Everything is fine until you reach Christmas. [December] 26/28 is still not right to play. We accept that, we play, it’s tradition but it’s really tough.

“January is not better and the more successful we are in cups, it’s the same. So it is a difficult two months ahead.”

Klopp did deliver some good news to Liverpool fans on the injury front ahead of Saturday’s trip to Wolves, confirming that Joe Gomez and Naby Keita are nearing a return to action.

He said: “It was really nice to see them in training, they looked brilliant. They will use the next two days and do what they have to do. If nothing happens they should be in contention again.”
