Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp namechecks Newcastle United as side that could break into top five

Jurgen Klopp has namechecked Newcastle United as one of the team's that could challenge the top five this season. The Liverpool boss has watched on as the Reds recorded two score draws in their opening pair of Premier League fixtures after initially insisting that the 2022/23 campaign could be one of the toughest seasons so far.

The Magpies beat newly promoted Nottingham Forest in their opening fixture and then picked up a 0-0 draw at Brighton. Klopp was asked if the competition will now be more intense between Liverpool and Manchester City with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur looking to get in on the act.

After having City, Spurs and Arsenal put to him, Klopp then interrupted the interviewer and threw in the name of Newcastle. Klopp said: "And United (Manchester United)...and Newcastle. And somebody sitting at home saying 'You forgot us'.

"But that's how it is. The old season is finished and you can analyse or not, it's already clear - the next season will be more difficult. That's how it is. But all the teams have improved pretty much.

"Everybody tries to improve in the transfer market and this type of thing. The only thing we can think about is our own stuff. I am positive but will see."
