Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp hits back at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United penalty row continues

Jurgen Klopp has reignited the dispute over Manchester United's tendency to win penalties ahead of Liverpool's visit to Old Trafford.

Last month, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claimed he had noticed a difference in penalty calls for United since Klopp questioned the number of spotkicks they had received.

Klopp had complained in January that United had 'had more penalties in two years than I had in five-and-a-half-years'.

Five of United's 11 penalties awarded last season came after Klopp's outburst, but Solskjaer felt compelled to talk about the matter after seeing United denied what he felt was two clear penalties in the win at West Ham earlier this season.

"We just have to hope we get what we deserve," Solskjaer said at the time. "We should have had three penalties in the last two games.

"There was a certain manager last year who was starting to worry about us getting pens and after that it seems like the decisions are more difficult to give.

"I've seen a big, big difference since then. We just have to leave it to the refs and hopefully they'll make the right calls very soon."

United have won just one penalty this season in the league - Bruno Fernandes' missed effort in the home defeat to Aston Villa - and the topic was raised in Klopp's pre-match press conference ahead of Liverpool's visit to Old Trafford this weekend.

Repeating his claim that United are disproportionately awarded more penalties, Klopp said: "We cannot influence referees with things like that.

"They are good, they go in the box, have these situations, but so do we and didn't have even a similar number [of penalties]. Those are just facts. But it's done now."

This season, Liverpool have also been awarded just one Premier League penalty, while Klopp also hailed his side's goalscoring abilities from all areas of the pitch ahead of the United clash.

He said: "It helps but we're not just relying on our goalscoring skills. It's more a coincidence we've scored that often, in a row it's quite strange we've done that. It's perfectly fine to win 1-0 and keep a clean sheet."
