Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp gives Roberto Firmino injury update

Roberto Firmino will undergo a scan with Liverpool waiting to discover the extent of the striker’s hamstring injury.

Firmino was forced off shortly before half-time of the 1-1 Premier League draw at home to Chelsea on Saturday evening.

The Brazilian, making his first start of the season, was in conversation with Jurgen Klopp on the touchline during a break in play before being replaced by Diogo Jota.

And the forward will have the injury assessed on Sunday with the Reds hoping he does not face an extended spell on the sidelines.

Asked about the injury, Klopp said: “Serious? I don’t know. Serious enough to take him off? Yes.

“Bobby felt his hamstring, came over and told us and we had to prepare the change.

“Bobby is nobody who raises the hand when he doesn’t feel anything.

“It doesn’t look too serious but you never know before you have a scan and we will know tomorrow.”

Liverpool are not in action until a fortnight on Sunday at Leeds United, while Firmino will in any case join Alisson Becker and Fabinho in not travelling to Brazil for their three World Cup qualifiers during the international break with Premier League clubs refusing to release players due to concerns over quarantine.

Harvey Elliott was given only a second league start against Chelsea with Naby Keita the man to make way for the returning Fabinho, who missed last week’s win over Burnley.

And Klopp said of the youngster: “He was good. He looked good last week in the game and was good in the training week.

“We wanted to change a little bit. We wanted to have the dynamic of Hendo in the team and Bobby in between the lines. That all worked out pretty well.

“On the right side, we didn’t want to change something on top of that as well.

“Harvey was from the first day of pre-season with us. He looks fit obviously and can deal with 95 minutes and that’s important for us and important today, and that’s why we started him and left him on the pitch.”
