Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp defends Andy Robertson after 'silly' yellow card against Bayern Munich

Jurgen Klopp labelled Liverpool defender Andy Robertson's late yellow-card challenge against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena as "silly", though stopped short of criticising the player.

The Scottish left-back will miss the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals next month after being cautioned in stoppage time of a memorable 3-1 victory secured courtesy of a Sadio Mane brace and an effort from Virgil van Dijk.

Robertson's foul on Leon Goretzka will deprive Liverpool of one of their most consistent performers at a pivotal stage of the competition and while Klopp made no excuses for the player, he offered his age as a mitigating factor and did not appear overly concerned.

"It was silly but he is still a young boy," he told BT Sport. "We should not worry about things like that though."

Liverpool suffered an early setback in Bavaria, with Jordan Henderson forced off through injury.

Providing an update on his captain after the full-time whistle, Klopp said: "It’s a big night with a little shadow that is Hendo’s twisted ankle.

"It’s Hendo so he’s a hard one, but we have to see of course. It looks hopefully not that serious but for tonight we had to change.

"That’s always a bad sign for a game, when you have to change early.

"We trained with him there in that position - we wanted to, not to rest Fabinho, but we wanted to bring in fresh legs and Hendo had fresh legs but unfortunately that didn’t help with the ankle."
