Liverpool boss hails the return to fitness of two Irish World Cup hopefuls

Liverpool boss Matt Beard has hailed the return to fitness of Ireland duo Niamh Fahey and Leanne Kiernan.

The pair have made timely comebacks from injury - and with two league games remaining they can both put their names in the frame for this summer’s World Cup.

Kiernan hadn’t played since she suffered a devastating ankle injury against Chelsea last September, while Fahey had been absent since January.

They both returned to the matchday squad for last weekend’s 2-1 win over Manchester City, a result that guaranteed the Reds’ Women’s Super League survival.

And while neither made it off the bench, Beard hinted at a role for the pair in Liverpool’s remaining games against Aston Villa and Manchester United.

“I’ll have Niamh Fahey back fully fit, Leanne as well, and all of a sudden I’ve got options and a real good attacking threat,” said Beard.

“That has been our Achilles heel most of the season – not having that attacking threat.”
