Liverpool beer inspired by famous red kit to be served at Anfield

Here’s a tipple to help cheer up Liverpool fans after their Champions League defeat against Barcelona this week.

A leading brewer has created a ruby beer in homage to the Merseyside club’s famous red kit.

And the Red Barley pilsner, by Carlsberg, will be on sale in the stadium bars at Anfield for the second leg of the semi-final clash on Tuesday.

The beer will also be made available globally after supporters crashed the club’s website searching for supplies following the handing out of 2,000 bottles at the stadium last week.

Carlsberg said the ale was brewed from naturally red barley to celebrate legendary Liverpool manager Bill Shankly’s decision to change to an all red kit to intimidate the opposition in 1964.

Defiant Liverpool stars "will keep believing" as double dose of heartache looms

Birgitte Skadhauge, head of the Carlsberg Research Laboratory, said: “Unlike traditional red ales, the colour of this pilsner comes from the outer shell of the red barley variant, which has a relatively low climate-resistance and has therefore proved tricky to grow in the quantity we required for brewing.

“But we’re delighted our team’s been able to crack it. We brewed this special beer for Liverpool FC fans and we hope they enjoy it.”

Britain’s first orange coloured wine will hit shelves at Waitrose next month. The Surrey-made Litmus Orange Bacchus will cost £14.99 a bottle.

Mohamed Salah surprises fans with Liverpool pub trip hours after Barcelona loss

It is not the only beer-related Reds news to break in the wake of their Champions League defeat.

Mohamed Salah surprised fans with an appearance in a local pub on Thursday as he filmed a TV advert.

Fans were shocked to see the teetotal Egyptian arrive just hours after jetting back from Barcelona as he filmed scenes inside and in the beer garden.
