Liverpool beating Barcelona forced Lionel Messi into 'WhatsApp transfer demand'

Liverpool's knockout defeat of Barcelona in the Champions League last season had a huge impact on the Catalan giants.

Jurgen Klopp’s side  produced a stunning comeback to rock Barca  at Anfield after  losing the first-leg of the semi-final 3-0 at Camp Nou .

The Reds, of course, went on to lift the trophy in Madrid by beating Spurs 2-0.

Spanish media this season have suggested Barcelona are still suffering from "Anfield syndrome", remaining "trapped" as "every day is Liverpool".

And now reports from France Football claim Lionel Messi contacted former teammate Neymar on WhatsApp to issue a transfer plea in the wake of the Anfield loss.

His apparent message to the Brazilian forward was: "Only together can we win the Champions League. I want you to come back.

"In two years, I'm leaving, and you'll be alone, you'll take my place."

While it is difficult to imagine quite how those alleged words may have become public knowledge, it is clear there was interest from Barca over bringing their past star Neymar back from PSG.

The saga rolled on all summer but a deal could not be agreed before the window closed.

Eric Abidal, Barcelona's director of football, has confirmed that Neymar could still be an option further down the line.

As cited by the Mail, Abidal said: "A top player, who has a Barca philosophy and who is performing at a high level, will always be an option.

"From there, at the sports level we can make decisions, but the whole financial issue, there are things that you can reach and others that you cannot.

"The future will say. If it continues at this level, because the season is very long, I will not say that it will be option No 1 but it can be a clear option."
