Liverpool band's 'dream came true' after 'grafting' for years

An up-and-coming indie rock band from Liverpool says their dream has come true after 'grafting' for years.

have vowed to continue their “vicious and beautiful” live shows across Europe with their unique form of Scouse sound.

Stone have made their name through their energetic shows performed everywhere from Blackpool to Berlin. They have already supported artists such as The Kooks in Portugal and Louis Tomlinson in Malaga.

Fin Power from Wavertree and Alex Smith from Walton, both aged 23, spoke to the ECHO about their experiences. Fin said: “Going on tour in different countries is a dream come true. A lot of times me and Alex will have a drink together and go, ‘our life is mad!’”

Alex added: “Playing in Malaga at a football stadium to support Louis Tomlinson was incredible. I’ve never played in front of the sun before and got sunburnt from it!”

Fin said: “Our live shows are vicious and beautiful. You’ll have to come to one of our gigs to find out what that looks like.”

Along with Sarah Surrage and Elliot Gill, this group of mates have already toured in Europe despite forming just over three years ago. They came together through chance meetings through education and house parties.

Fin is the lead singer and guitarist and Alex is the drummer. Elliot is the lead guitarist while Sarah is on bass. Fin said: “I met Elliot at a house party in my tracksuit. I told him my name was Fin Power 24 Hour, which he really liked!”

Alex added: “Sarah went to university with me at John Moores. We’ve been blessed to have her in the band.”

They described their tours in Europe as fun affairs, with regular karaoke sessions. One memorable moment came when a window on their minibus was smashed on a Parisian motorway due to heavy winds.

Alex said: “The door had been slammed previously, and that combined with the wind pressure caused a window to smash at the back of the bus. It was crazy, but I just put my head down and kept eating my croissant.” He added: “We managed to patch the window up with cardboard, plastic bags and a crisp packet.”

Despite their recent success, Fin emphasised that their path hasn’t been straightforward. He said: “We’ve actually been grafting for seven years through various different things. I remember watching other bands do live tours and I envied them.”

He added: “I read once that it takes 20 years to become an overnight success, which rings true in our case.”

Stone are keen not to forget their roots. Their first gig was in The Shipping Forecast on Slater Street, but many of their old haunts have gone.

Alex said: “It’s hard starting out in Liverpool now because so many of the places we started in have closed down. I was very sad to hear about the Arts Club shutting their doors.”

Nevertheless, Fin and Alex are optimistic about their future. When asked to describe their music, Fin said: “Someone on our YouTube video said our sound was ‘post-apocalyptic scally rock'. We like that description.”

In a tongue-in-cheek manner, he added: “At our live shows, you can expect fireworks, explosions, yachts and private jets.”

Stone will be performing at the 02 Academy in Liverpool on April 22 as part of their UK tour. You can buy tickets for their shows here.
