Liverpool bakery celebrating city's independent businesses

A stunning new mural celebrating Liverpool's independent businesses has been painted on one of the city's oldest stores.

The Bread Shop, on Aigburth Road, has been serving customers for more than 60 years and went above and beyond to help people in lockdown.

From staff working weeks without a day off, to sending food parcels to vulnerable people, the bakery worked around the clock to provide for people in the community.

Independent artist, Sean Webster, 18, completed a mural on the side of the shop last week, to celebrate the local community and the store.

Sean said: "Before Alan and I did it, we asked people on social media what the mural should be.

"We got the community involved in that respect. I've done murals all around Liverpool, but this one was a proper team effort, I really feel like that.

"Alan and I are both two independents coming together to give something back to the community and to the customers who kept independent businesses going.

"It was really powerful and it got the message out there.

The mural includes images of fruit and veg, cakes and other items.

Sean said each picture represented a local business in the area which collaborated with the Bread Shop.

Owner Alan Gordon said: "I think small, independent shops have been our life blood in communities in Liverpool, especially when there was shortages in stores and things like toilet roll and other items ran out.

"I think people would have really struggled and people realised how important local shops were in the community."

Alan said members of the local community worked together with Sean to create the mural, suggesting what could feature on it.

The mural was completed over 16 hours and is the latest mural for Sean to complete in Liverpool.

Sean also painted a mural in the Baltic Triangle, to celebrate Liverpool coming together after a difficult lockdown.

Located on Jamaica Street, the 'Together' artwork marks the end of some restrictions as people were finally able to reunite after months apart.

Sean also has murals on Edge Lane, Booker Avenue and in the city centre. His work has seen him cross paths with the likes of Sean Lennon and Brian Ray

He works from his city centre based studio in MerseryMade on Paradise Street where you can find him working and purchase original pieces of his work.
