Liverpool backed to sign "outstanding" World Cup finalist on free transfer

Liverpool should move for veteran goalkeeper Danijel Subasic as a short-term stop-gap in the wake of Alisson's latest injury.

That's according to former England stopper Paul Robinson, who thinks that the Croatia international would be an "outstanding" addition to Jurgen Klopp's side.

Subasic was Croatia's No.1 as they reached the World Cup final in 2018, when his fine save from Harry Kane in the semi-finals prevented England from going 2-0 up and perhaps running away with the game.

He retired from international football after the Croatians lost the final to France, and he spent the last of nine seasons at Monaco in 2019/20, when he played in just one match in the French League Cup.

He's now available on a free transfer after his contract expired, and Robinson - the former Leeds, Tottenham, Blackburn and Burnley stopper who picked up 41 caps for England between 2003 and 2007 - thinks that the veteran would be an upgrade on Adrian in Alisson's absence.

“Subasic is an outstanding goalkeeper,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“A top goalkeeper that did brilliantly for Croatia in the World Cup.

"I am very surprised that he is still a free agent. I thought somebody would have snapped him up by now.

“Adrian is out of form and his confidence looks shot to pieces.

“If Alisson is going to be out for six weeks, Subasic would be an outstanding signing for them.”

Despite Robinson's insistence, there is little chance that the Reds will move swiftly to bring in Subasic unless there is suddenly a freak injury.

Alisson could face another month on the sidelines, meaning that Adrian will take over in goal and Irish youngster Caoimhin Kelleher will be on the bench.

Liverpool are also not planning on a move for Stoke's Jack Butland despite weekend reports.
