Liverpool backed to seal "ideal" Luis Suarez transfer despite former Red slamming exit strategy

John Barnes believes Luis Suarez returning to Liverpool would be "ideal" for the Reds despite previous opposition from Robbie Fowler.

The Uruguayan spent two-and-a-half years at Anfield before leaving for Barcelona in 2014.

He has since left and joined Atletico Madrid where he has continued to produce.

Liverpool's attack, having fired for so many years, has seemed to lose its spark this term and there has been talk of reinforcements being added.

Barnes has identified Suarez, who scored 82 times for the Reds, as the perfect signing provided he wouldn't rock the boat.

He told Goal: "If they could get Luis on a free transfer that’d be ideal but it’ll come down to whether Luis says he wants to play every week or he’ll be happy to move across and be part of the squad.

"But, because of his age, I don’t think he could expect to be playing every week.

"The tricky things with these type of transfers is that you have to be pretty certain that the player in question isn’t going to upset things.

"Liverpool needs to recreate their team spirit and togetherness and, in order to do so, the players need to be happy with where they are and level of play. If Luis can do this, then great - get him on board."

But Fowler has previously taken issue with Suarez and the fans affection towards him.

The Uruguayan was a huge success at Liverpool (PA)

The Uruguayan made moves to quit Liverpool 12 months before he finally did and has been accused of only performing to ensure he remained in the shop window.

"I have a big problem with how Liverpool fans love him," said Fowler in 2019.

"He left Liverpool but the way he left. He wanted a move to Arsenal and people say 'well he stayed, was still brilliant, never downed tools'.

"He started playing well because he wanted to leave. He would've gone to Arsenal had Liverpool allowed it. So that's why I have a big thing about the Liverpool fans loving him."
