Liverpool backed to beat Man City to Premier League title thanks to Lionel Messi decision

Liverpool have been tipped to win the Premier League again this season by one of their former players.

The Reds are gearing up for the defence of their league crown, which begins at home to newly-promoted Leeds United on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp will be happy with his side’s performances in pre-season, after a 7-2 win over Blackpool on Saturday in their final friendly before next week’s league opener.

While results on the pitch have been encouraging, much of the talk in the build-up to the new campaign has been dominated by transfers.

Liverpool have brought in Kostas Tsimikas to compete for the left-back position, while other clubs across the English top flight continue to splash the cash.

Title rivals Manchester City have added defender Nathan Ake and winger Ferran Torres to their ranks, while also bringing in former Reds goalkeeper Scott Carson on loan.

There has also been some far-fetched talk that Lionel Messi could be heading to the Etihad Stadium, before the Barcelona talisman announced that he would not be leaving the Nou Camp this summer.

Murphy reckons that, after suggestions that Messi signing for Man City were dismissed, Liverpool are now the favourites to win the Premier League title.

"I think either Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola will be champions again in May," Murphy told the  Daily Mail.

"But I believe the latest twist in Lionel Messi's on-off move to Manchester City swings the advantage back to Anfield.

"As it stands, the evidence points to Liverpool's.

"Everything about the team works, everyone understands their jobs from full-backs to up front. To use a car analogy, you know they’ll pass the MOT before going into the garage.

"Some will question the lack of transfer activity but I’m sure Klopp believes the old saying: ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.

"The durability of front three Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino is phenomenal, a credit to them and the Liverpool sports science department.

"Not enough cover? Well, they do have Divock Origi, Takumi Minamino, Xherdan Shaqiri, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Rhian Brewster. Klopp seems happy with that and he’s been right on almost everything else."
