Liverpool backed for European Cup number seven and more Istanbul glory despite Napoli loss

Despite falling to opening day defeat against Napoli, Liverpool are still the punters’ pick to win the Champions League, accruing more bets than favourites Manchester City.

Over the last week, 18% of all bets in the market have backed Liverpool to win the European Cup at Istanbul's Ataturk Stadium on May 30 next year, scene of their 2005 success, which is more than any other side.

That’s ahead of City (16%), Juventus (11%) and Barcelona (9%) in the race for the top honour, with money continuing to come for the Reds.

In turn, that makes them the third favourite in the market at 7/1, of which City are favourites to win their first European title, priced at 7/2 best price.

Barcelona are sandwiched between the two leading English sides at 6/1 with PSG following after Liverpool in the fourth favourite at 10/1.

Elsewhere, Mohammed Salah is among the favourites to finish as top scorer in the competition, priced at 14/1 ahead of the likes of Harry Kane (20/1) and Raheem Sterling (16/1).

Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: “After Liverpool managed to lose all three away group matches in last year's Champions League, before going on to lift the trophy, punters aren't being fooled by their opening-day defeat in Naples.

"Jurgen Klopp's men are nigh-unbeatable at Anfield, making them the toughest proposition over two-legs in Europe.

"It's becoming increasingly clear that it'll take something monumentally special to dump Liverpool out of the competition, which is why many are backing the Reds to reclaim their crown."

Champions League winner:

Man City - 7/2; Barcelona - 6/1; Liverpool - 7/1; PSG - 10/1; Juventus - 11/1; Bayern Munich - 12/1; Real Madrid 16/1.
