Federico Chiesa, the 27-year-old Italy international, has been excluded from Liverpool's Champions League squad.
His omission was due to squad limitations, as only 17 homegrown players are permitted on the list.
Teenage forward Rio Ngumhoa was selected in Chiesa's place after impressing in pre-season and scoring on his Premier League debut.
Chiesa has struggled with fitness and form since joining Liverpool a year ago, managing limited playing time this season.
Italy coach Genarro Gatuso confirmed Chiesa recently stated he did not feel "100 per cent" ready for an international recall.
