Liverpool arrive in Austria as pre-season schedule takes on a new look

Liverpool have touched down in Austria as they begin their preparations for a truncated pre-season programme.

The Reds flew out on Saturday morning via private jet after a last-minute change of plan was enforced by the government's decision to add France to the quarantine list.

On Thursday evening, it was confirmed that anyone flying to France from Saturday onwards would be made to self-isolate for 14 days upon return to the United Kingdom.

With France being added to the list alongside the Netherlands and Malta, the Premier League champions were forced to move to a contingency plan that had been in place for such an eventually.

The Reds had planned to fly out to the Evian-les-Bains camp near the border of Geneva to kick-start their pre-season schedule. The site is a favourite of Klopp and his staff with the Reds having visited there the last two summers.

However, backup options were considered as the club braced themselves for the region being placed on the government's list.

The Austrian training camp is designed to ensure Jurgen Klopp and his players are able to work while sticking to the quarantine rules and the squad departed Merseyside on Saturday morning.

Germany was another option that was under consideration by Anfield officials, but the champions have now touched down in Austria as they get set to step up their fitness regime.

With just under a month until the defence of their Premier League title begins, the Reds are ready to work once again after the players were recently given their own programmes to follow in the same way they were during the lockdown period.

Just 48 days separate the end of last season and the start of the next and Liverpool took the decision not to give their squad a lengthy break with Klopp's players instead permitted just a week of holiday time.

And the ECHO understands the Austria camp is unlikely to be as intense as previous European ventures given that the players have kept to tailored sessions over much of the last week.

As a result, Liverpool staff are hopeful their players will hit the ground running when the action begins in Austria with no need for extensive fitness work to be undertaken.

As things stand, Liverpool have no pre-season friendlies arranged but will take part in the Community Shield on Saturday August 29.
