Liverpool area to welcome new Aldi store with plans set to be approved

Plans for a new Aldi shop in Speke are set to be approved by Liverpool Council.

Members of the council’s planning committee are set to approve plans for the new shop on the site of an old tea factory on Speke Hall Road.

In addition to the new Aldi, permission could also be granted for a new drive-thru restaurant and petrol station, although more details about the design for the restaurant and petrol station would need to be brought to the council before they could be built.

Councillors have been recommended to approve the plans for the site, which is a large and vacant plot.

A report to councillors said: “It was occupied by a former tea factory but has been cleared of all development and remediation works have been undertaken in preparation for future development.

“Adjacent to the site lies the Ansa site which is a Ford storage and distribution depot which has its own rail link. Opposite the site on Speke Hall Road is a Ford car dealership. On the opposite sides of Speke Road/Speke Boulevard lies Estuary Business Park and Dobbies Garden Centre.”

Almost 200 people have given their views on the plans, with the vast majority supportive of the proposals to build a new Aldi.

However, some residents have raised concerns about traffic and there has also been objections submitted by Morrisons and Asda, which both have shops nearby.

The council’s planning committee will meet on Tuesday to consider the proposals.
