Liverpool area to get £1m ahead of Everton stadium move

A struggling Liverpool high street is set to get a £1m funding boost to try to halt its decline.

The cash injection for County Road comes as part of plans which will aim to regenerate the area ahead of Everton's proposed stadium move away from the area.

The road was historically a main shopping route for the surrounding area, but like other parts of the city some sections now suffer with a high vacancy rate, dilapidation and crime.

And the ECHO reported earlier this year on how fly tipping, crime and shop closures are also threatening its future.

Is county road on the decline?

But next week the council's cabinet will vote on making the area the focus of a new push to regenerate struggling high streets in the city, with the new funding being part of that.

The report submitted to cabinet says County Road has some of the most challenging problems of any shopping area in Liverpool.

It says: "With this in mind, a unique opportunity and inherent challenge presents itself for County Road with the possible relocation of Everton Football Club , and the impact that could have on the centre and wider neighbourhood."

The funding is from a Liverpool City Region fund to help support town and district centres - and the council plan to use it to formulate a wider plan to help County and other Liverpool high streets.

The report doesn't detail specifically how the £1m funding will be used but says a wider plan for County Road will be formulated in the coming months.

The report says: "This will involve local members, appropriate Cabinet members, the business community, residents and key local stakeholders including Everton FC . Given the length and diversity on the road is likely to take a phased approach."

There are also hopes a wider retail policy for the city's high streets can be formulated to help them adapt as internet shopping and declining footfall take their toll.

The cabinet will vote on the plan next Friday.
