Liverpool are proving Jurgen Klopp right over Champions League question that annoyed him

Jurgen Klopp was irked by the line of questioning.

The Liverpool manager was asked in the bowels of the Allianz Arena whether the Premier League title race had to take priority over the chase for Champions League glory.

Gary Neville had been one of a number of pundits arguing that the Jurgen Klopp hits back at 'pundits from Manchester United' over Liverpool title race comments at the hands of Bayern Munich to maximise their chances of domestic success.

“I really don't think that any other coach or manager in the world has to answer this question when he plays in the Champions League,” Klopp responded.

“It's really unique. It only happens if you are the Liverpool manager and the pundits come from Manchester United and start these things.”

Twenty-four hours later the Reds delivered their own emphatic statement on how much the competition means to them with the most complete away European performance of Klopp's reign.

Bayern weren't just beaten but embarrassed in their own backyard as Liverpool produced a display brimming with maturity and control.

“A big step,” was the manager's concise verdict after an old foe had been vanquished and a cure had been found for the Reds' European travel sickness.

For all the talk at the time about Bayern being a fading force they are once again sitting top of the Bundesliga having thrashed title rivals Borussia Dortmund 5-0 on Saturday.

Since that memorable night in Bavaria, the Reds have maintained momentum with gutsy Premier League victories over Fulham, Tottenham and Southampton.

It's hardly been free-flowing and convincing but, crucially, they have dug themselves out of some big holes and keep on finding a way to win.

“The boys are mentality monsters,” was Klopp's colourful description of the grit and spirit they showed at St Mary's on Friday night.

Three weeks on from Munich, Klopp is likely to be spared more talk about his list of priorities ahead of Tuesday night's Champions League quarter-final first leg with Porto at Anfield.

There is no debate. Why pick one above the other at this stage? Liverpool are in a position where they simply have to go flat out for the two biggest trophies in club football.

Of course the sense of longing for the top-flight crown is the greater as a result of that painful 29-year wait. But the Champions League is hardly a consolation prize.

A year ago, with one eye on the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final with Manchester City, Klopp took Liverpool to Goodison and made five changes.

Philippe Coutinho on 'dream' Liverpool return and why beating Manchester United would mean so much

The Reds' cushion in the top-four spots meant that a dour draw at Goodison was deemed acceptable with bigger fish to fry.

This time around the dynamic is very different. There is no margin for error. There is no let-up in terms of pressure during the run-in.

Five league games and potentially a further five in Europe stand between the class of 2018/19 and Anfield immortality. Ten games from greatness to borrow Gerard Houllier's infamous quote.

The Champions League draw undoubtedly did Liverpool a favour by pairing them with Porto. They avoided the quality of Barcelona and Juventus and the intensity of doing battle with a Premier League rival.

The Reds know what to expect having cruised to a 5-0 aggregate win when they met the Portuguese champions in the last 16 last season.

Sergio Conceicao's side will be desperate to give a better account of themselves this time around and the fact that they knocked out Roma in the last round commands respect.

But Porto haven't won in 18 previous attempts on English soil and haven't even scored on their last six visits.

Jurgen Klopp on his Liverpool future and the "overwhelming" power of Anfield

When Liverpool travelled to Porto in February 2018, it was the first time the club had even been involved in a knockout tie in the competition since 2009.

Remarkably, 14 months on, they are chasing a second successive showpiece final appearance. The road to Madrid on June 1 gives them the chance to exorcise the ghosts of Kiev.

These ties tend to bring out the best in Klopp. He boasts a perfect record in two-legged affairs during his Liverpool reign having restored the club's reputation across the continent.

Andy Robertson's suspension for the first leg isn't ideal but James Milner can fill the void as the Reds look to secure a lead to take to the Estádio do Dragão next Wednesday.

It's been a low key build up to Liverpool's 15th European Cup quarter-final. Thoughts have been dominated by domestic matters but Anfield will be rocking come Tuesday night. The prize at stake is huge with Barcelona or Manchester United in the semis.

The Roberto Firmino injury that has helped Liverpool transform title challenge

Liverpool's Premier League title hopes hinges on City stumbling over the coming weeks. The Reds could conceivably collect 97 points and it still might not be enough, although City's gruelling April schedule should provide Kopites with encouragement.

In contrast Klopp's men are masters of their own destiny in Europe. There is no-one to fear.

Forget pecking orders and priorities,  there's a dream double up for grabs. You don't pick one when you can still have both.
