Liverpool are no longer world champions as Bayern Munich make history

Liverpool were dethroned as world champions after Bayern Munich claimed victory in the FIFA Club World Cup on Thursday night.

The Reds won that title, their first in the competition, in December 2019 with a 1-0 victory over Flamengo - thanks to a goal from Roberto Firmino.

But as they say, all good things must come to an end and Bayern will now hold that honour until another team claims victory in the tournament.

The German side are only the second team in history after Barcelona to win all six domestic and international titles consecutively, due to the fact they already held the Champions League, Super Cup, German Super Cup, Bundesliga and German Cup titles.

They faced Mexican outfit Tigres in the final but ultimately dominated play and ran out 1-0 victors, thanks to Benjamin Pavard's goal.

No other team from Mexico had ever made it as far in the competition as Tigres but they stumbled at the last hurdle against a strong Die Roten outfit.

Although they gave the German side a stronger challenge than some may have previously thought, with Bayern having one goal disallowed in the first half as the sides went into the break level.

The deadlock was finally broken, albeit after a lengthy VAR check when Pavard latched on to a Robert Lewandowski header who was eventually judged to be onside in the buildup.

Lewandowski scored a brace in Bayern's semi-final against African champions Al Ahly to set up their chance to claim the Club World Cup.

Hansi Flick's side qualified for the tournament, hosted out in Qatar, by winning the Champions League - following the same path to becoming World Champions as Liverpool did back in December 2019.

The competition, which was used as a test event for the FIFA World Cup, Qatar 2022, was moved from its original December date because of Covid restrictions.
