Liverpool are in transfer talks over Takumi Minamino, RB Salzburg chief confirms

Red Bull Salzburg sporting director Christoph Freund has confirmed that the club are in talks with Liverpool over a deal for Takumi Minamino.

The Reds are preparing a January swoop for the Japanese forward, whose contract contains a release clause worth just £7.25million.

And Freund has described it as 'an honour' that one of Salzburg's star men has attracted interest from the reigning European champions.

He said: "I can confirm that there are currently discussions with Liverpool. It is an honour which clubs are interested in our players."

Minamino shone in his side's two Champions League group-stage meetings with Liverpool this season.

The 24-year-old scored a stunning volley as Salzburg fought back from three goals down to draw level before losing a 4-3 thriller at Anfield.

He was also prominent in a 2-0 defeat to the Reds in Austria on Tuesday evening - a result that sent Jurgen Klopp's team into the knockout stages at the expense of their hosts.

It now looks that Minamino's impressive showings have earned him a move to the Premier League leaders.
