Liverpool announce professional deal for defender who comes from sporting family

Liverpool have announced Lee Jonas has signed his first professional contract with the club.

The defender played for Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s Under-18s last season and started this campaign with a goal in the opening day victory over Stoke.

Jonas, who is 17, has been with the Reds since joining the Under-12s from Everton.

A centre-back by trade who is strong in the tackle, the youngster can also play at full-back and even in midfield.

Jonas was one of several Liverpool academy players who started in England Under-18s match against Wales recently and he has been a regular for the Three Lions at various age groups.

The Reds’ latest signing comes from a sporting family and is the nephew of boxer Natasha Jonas who became the first ever British female fighter to compete at the Olympic Games in London nine years ago.

On Thursday, she proudly tweeted the news and told her 44,000 followers: “Finally, I've been waiting to announce this. We'll done kidda.”

Last August, Jonas, who won silver at the 2014 European Championships, shared an image of her relative in his Liverpool shirt and said: “Ladies and gentlemen, my nephew, Lee Jonas #90 Remember the name! Xx #Proud”

Jonas has put pen-to-paper at a time when a number of youngsters have been handed first-team opportunities.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott have all been afforded opportunities by manager Jurgen Klopp in recent years.
