Liverpool and Villareal fans 'bond' behind police decision for second leg clash

Police have categorised tonight's Champions League semi-final second leg clash between Liverpool and Villareal in Spain as a 'low risk' fixture because of the bonds displayed between the two sets of supporters.

Merseyside Police has reported back on a UEFA meeting, held before tonight's match in the Spanish city, regarding planning and security. On its twitter account the force said the friendly ties between the fans, which were on show in the first leg at Anfield last week, meant the event could be classed as low risk.

Merseyside Police said: "Just out of the UEFA meeting. To clarify the police match commander has categorised tonight's match as low risk due to the bonds between supporters at Anfield. There will be a short hold back at the end for congestion reasons only."

Liverpool produced a convincing performance at Anfield last week to open up a 2-0 lead over the Spanish side to take into tonight's second leg. If they complete the job this evening, they will face either Manchester City or Real Madrid in the Champions League final later this month.

Villareal fans were widely praised by locals for their passionate support, lively energy and respect while they were in Liverpool last week and during the Anfield match. The friendly connection between the supporters was exemplified as famous Beatles hit Yellow Submarine was played through the speaker system after the first leg clash. The Spanish side, who play in yellow, take their nickname from the famous Fab Four tune.

Responding to the police announcement ahead of tonight's clash, Liverpool West Derby MP and lifelong LFC fan Ian Byrne tweeted: "Brilliant to see. #UnityIsStrength." The news was also warmly welcomed by the Liverpool Disabled Supporters Association among others.

Liverpool are eyeing a glorious finale to the season, chasing success in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup to go with their victory in the Carabao Cup Final earlier this year. It was revealed today that Liverpool Council is now putting plans in place for a potential victory parade that could be held in the city.
