Liverpool and Southend strikers, Man Utd teenager plus ex-Middlesbrough duo - Swansea City transfer rumours assessed

Swansea City are continuing to scour the globe in search of potential summer signings.

Steve Cooper is yet to add to his ranks ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, although the Swans have been linked with many players already.

Patience will no doubt be required in what is set to be a significantly changed market as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

It's understood Cooper is keen to bolster his squad by signing a goalkeeper, centre-back, central midfielder a No.10 and at least one striker.

Freddie Woodman is the obvious name when it comes to the first of those positions.

The goalkeeper excelled during his season-long loan at the club last term, and he's very keen to extend his stay at the Liberty Stadium.

With Newcastle's proposed takeover collapsing, the ball could well get rolling regarding Woodman's current situation, with the Magpies expected to offer him a new contract before sending him back out on loan.

It's a move that would suit all parties, and it's one that - as things stand - fans can have real hope of seeing go through.

Following the departure of Mike van der Hoorn, Swansea could really do with some experience at the heart of their defence.

Former Middlesbrough man Daniel Ayala certainly fits the bill in that regard.

The 29-year-old is a free agent having recently left Boro, meaning the Swans wouldn't need to pay a transfer fee for the defender.

However, his wages would be an issue. And it's understood Swansea are not exploring the option of signing Ayala.

And his former Boro team mate George Friend is another to be touted with a switch to Swansea.

Friend recently saw his contract at the Riverside Stadium expire, although he has been offered fresh terms by Neil Warnock's side.

But as with Ayala, Friend isn't an option for the Swans at present.

Matt Grimes was the only man to play every single minute of Championship action for Swansea last term, and it's clear for all to see that the captain is one of Cooper's most trusted lieutenants.

And James Garner is certainly a player who could slot in the middle alongside Grimes.

The Manchester United youngster has had a taste of first team action under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but the Norwegian is eager for Garner to get regular minutes under his belt on loan next season.

It's understood Cooper thinks very highly of Garner, who captained the England Under-17 side that reached the semi-finals of the 2018 U17 European Championships under the current Swansea head coach.

He's a youngster with undeniable talent. And should Swansea be keen, Cooper's pulling power could be crucial once again. It's exactly the kind of loan you'd expect.

As for the No.10 berth, Swansea would love to see Conor Gallagher return on loan from Chelsea.

The English playmaker was a key figure for the Swans as they reached the play-offs last term.

However, the club are not hopeful of securing a fresh deal for the 20-year-old given that he is likely to attract Premier League interest.

Further up the pitch, should Andre Ayew depart as expected, Swansea would desperately need to add firepower up front.

Liam Cullen is inexperienced and will find himself behind at least one forward in the pecking order next term.

Rhian Brewster is thought to be keen to re-unite himself with Cooper following a stunning loan spell from Liverpool in the second half of the 2019/20 campaign.

The Englishman netted 11 times in his 22 appearances for the Swans, although Jurgen Klopp is set to run the rule over the 20-year-old this summer before deciding where his future lies.

Swansea can guarantee him game time, and the Reds would get the chance to observe how Brewster fares over the course of a full season for the first time should he be sent back to South Wales.

As with others on this list, it's a switch that makes sense for all parties.

Elsewhere, it's been reported that Swansea have had a bid rejected by Southend United for striker Charlie Kelman.

The report claims the Swans are keen to secure the services of the 18-year-old before sending him on loan to DC United.

He could well be seen as an investment for the future, and it means he's not a player that would come straight into the reckoning for the first team should a move materialise.

However, the League Two club's chairman Ron Martin told the Southend Echo: “Charlie isn’t for sale, definitely not.”
