Liverpool and Michael Edwards should have big concern about Perr Schuurs transfer move

Liverpool's need to sign a centre-back, given their current injury crisis, is fairly clear - but one name, Perr Schuurs, who has been extensively linked with a transfer switch, might not be the ideal answer.

Schuurs, who has been linked with a £27million (€30m) move to Anfield from Ajax, is an excellent young talent, who has progressed a huge amount over the last 12 months.

Last year, he made 10 Eredivisie appearances across the entire season, with three of those being off the bench, while already in this campaign he has made nine, as well as playing in all four of Ajax's Champions League games including their 0-1 home defeat against Liverpool in October.

The excitement about the 21-year-old is clear, and there are many elements of his game that the Reds will like, but one crucial element is missing for a Premier League - and particularly Liverpool - defender.

On a new 'Under the Radar' podcast from Blood Red, football and scouting writer Josh Williams explained: "There are certain links with players that you can immediately rule out because of how Liverpool recruit, but this was not one of those - I did think there could be something in it.

"Schuurs coped fairly well with Sadio Mane [in the first game against Liverpool] which is easier said than done given Mane is a complete player.

"But there are certain things that a Liverpool defender needs. Above everything else, they need to display a degree of dominance in various phases of the game.

"They have to be aerially dominant and Pep Lijnders have spoken about that in the past because Liverpool are a pressing team [teams tend to play longer passes against the Reds, often in the air, in order to escape the high-press of the front players].

"But despite being six foot three, he is not good in the air according to the numbers. This season, he has improved a tiny bit - in the Eredivisie and the Champions League, he is currently posting an aerial duel success rate of 60.4 per cent.

"But that is still not particularly high. Last season in the Premier League, Joel Matip, although he didn't play too frequently, posted about 83 per cent.

" Virgil van Dijk played every game and he posted about 73 per cent and Joe Gomez around 64 per cent. For six foot three Schuurs to be posting only 60 per cent is a bit of a surprise."

Standing at precisely 1.93 metres, you would not anticipate aerial prowess to be an area in which Schuurs struggles, but the numbers say otherwise.

Michael Edwards does not take chances on players, with as much analysis as possible conducting by the analytical team. And as much as there are many things to like about Schuurs, there might be better options available for Liverpool.

Williams added: "Schuurs did cope with Mane, so he demonstrated that he can cope one-versus-one.

"He is not the quickest but he wasn't slow enough against Liverpool for that to show up, and he is very good on the ball with things like long passes.

"He ticks some boxes without ticking all of them, but Liverpool are really good at spending according to the squad void in terms of the value that player will add.

"For example, Kostas Tsimikas was bought on a very specific budget, and Takumi Minamino was a rotation option for the squad and a player who would play sporadic minutes for a cost of £7.25m.

"Liverpool tend to spend according to what that place in the squad is worth, and what a third-choice central defender is worth, or fourth-choice possibly, €30m would be the absolute maximum."

So while Schuurs is clearly impressive, links to Liverpool could be wide of the mark, based on his lack of one key attribute. He might tick most of the boxes, but for Liverpool, that is not likely to be enough.
