Liverpool and Manchester set for Eurovision shortlist reveal

Liverpool and Manchester are set to find out whether they have made the shortlist to host the Eurovision Song Contest next year.

The cities will be hoping to make the shortlist of potential hosts which is set to be announced on BBC Radio 2 on Friday, August 12 by the European Broadcasting Union.

They are expected to face competition from the likes of Sheffield and London among others.

The European Broadcasting Union previously decided the event could not be held in the war-torn Ukraine following the Russian invasion.

This was despite Ukrainian entry Kalush Orchestra triumphing at this year's competition in Turin, Italy, with the UK's Sam Ryder the runner-up.

Any winner would require a large events space, suitable accommodation and international transport links for the competing countries and their delegations.

It will be the ninth time Eurovision has taken place in the UK - more than any other country.

Ukraine will automatically qualify for the grand final alongside the so-called big five nations - the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, who each get a free pass because of their financial contributions to the event.

Liverpool's assistant mayor and cabinet member for culture and visitor economy, Cllr Harry Doyle, said: "We are excited to have submitted a bid for Liverpool to host Eurovision 2023.

"Making a major event like this possible in such a short timeframe is complicated and is going to need some careful and creative planning, but we think Liverpool would be the perfect stage to celebrate this unique Eurovision.

"We look forward to finding out if we have been successful in getting through to the next stage of the process."
