Liverpool and Man Utd fined by UEFA while Jurgen Klopp gets Champions League warning

Liverpool and Manchester United have been handed €10,000 (£8,400) fines by UEFA's disciplinary body with Jurgen Klopp given a warning because of a delay to kick off in the Champions League quarter-final away to Benfica earlier this month.

The Anfield club won the first leg of their tie 3-1 in Lisbon but were judged by the governing body's observer to have delayed the game from beginning on time, leading to a written warning for the manager and financial penalty for the club.

United's fine relates to the throwing of objects during their round of 16 second leg defeat to Atletico Madrid on March 15, with Diego Simeone's side scoring late in the first half to progress 2-1 on aggregate.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are stepping up plans to offer Klopp a new contract that would keep him at the club beyond 2024.

The Reds are 90 minutes from a 10th European Cup final having won the first leg of their semi-final against Villarreal 2-0 last night.

Speaking afterwards Klopp, who moved to Merseyside from Borussia Dortmund in 2015, said: "Nothing happened yet, that’s how it is. For me, it’s the best example, you play a game and it’s 2-0 at half-time [then] you have to be completely on alert.

"You have to be 100 per cent in the right mood, you have to play the second half like you played the first half. There is nothing to defend [and] if you do that you [lose] immediately all the advantages you might have had before. We know we go there and it will be a tricky atmosphere for us and different from tonight.

"Their players, you saw it tonight, they fight with all they have and what I like [is] that everybody could see that we fought with all we have.

"It’s always the same. If they beat us with a result that brings them to the final, then they deserve it and if not then we deserve it. That’s how the competition is.

"We played a really good game and now in five days we will play again and we have to make sure that we are ready."
