Liverpool and Man City's Academy and Women's teams to participate in mouthguard study

Liverpool’s Academy and Women teams are set to use special mouthguards in training to assess the impact of heading the ball.

The move will form part of a Premier League research project after concerns about the long-term dangers of heading.

It is understood that mouthguards will be used to track data related to impact sustained after heading balls during training sessions.

The data will be sent in real-time to coaches and team medical personnel and assessed as part of research into brain and body injuries.

The research projects are being undertaken by the Premier League on behalf of a subgroup of the Professional Football Negotiating and Consultative Committee (PFNCC).

Manchester City's women and youth teams are also taking part in the project, with concussion substitutes and restrictions on heading in youth football having already been introduced this season.

“The Premier League’s focus is to make the game as safe as possible for all players,” Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said on the trial.

“We are working with our partners across football to achieve this and the research studies we are undertaking are just one example of our commitment to this important issue.

“We hope the results of this project will contribute to the development of practical guidelines for the professional and adult game in this country.”

The Football Association's chief medical officer Charlotte Cowie claimed on Tuesday that football was 'moving towards' changes to heading in professional training.

"There is no argument about decreasing the exposure to the amount of heading in the game," she said.

"The main exposure to heading is in training, and so limiting that training in terms of the number and type of heading as well is definitely the direction that we need to go in."

Before she continued: "If you say 20 headers for instance, if one of those is a short header from a short distance and one is a long header from a long punted ball, those forces might be quite different.

"It might be 10 (from a long ball) was equivalent to 20 shorter ones.

"We want a little bit more detail on that before we rule within the professional game but we fully intend to do that and also in the adult grassroots game."
