Liverpool and Man City 'invincibles' question answered as all-time Premier League teams ranked

Liverpool’s title-winning side have finished above any Manchester City squad as one of the greatest teams in Premier League history.

That’s according to a survey of over 1,000 football fans carried out by Betfair, in collaboration with YouGov, in which the Reds squad of 2019/2020 were voted as the joint second-best in the top-flight’s 30-year spell. Manchester United’s treble-winning side from 1998/1999 took top spot in the polls, with Liverpool level alongside Arsenal’s invincibles in receiving 15% of the vote.

All three beat any of Pep Guardiola’s City squads, including from the 2017/2018 campaign in which they amassed over 100 points with a goal difference of 79, but received just 9% backing - a small but satisfying early-season result for the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp’s squad followed up their 2019 Champions League glory with their first ever Premier League title and first top-flight glory for 30 years. An incredible six-month period from August saw the Reds win 26 games in a 27-match unbeaten run, helping them to hit 99 points with a final day win at Newcastle United to leave them 18 points ahead of second-placed City and a whopping 33 off Manchester United in third.

Klopp’s side were electric throughout that period between August and February, blowing away anyone who came near them including Guardiola’s men, who they beat 3-1 at Anfield in November. And the Reds were relatively unphased by the extended break that came with the outbreak of Covid-19 and subsequent lockdowns, returning to empty stadiums to win the league at a canter.

Unfortunately for fans, however, another of Liverpool’s squad were voted as the unluckiest team in the Premier League’s 30-year history. The 2018/2019 side racked up a stunning 97 points and won 30 of 38 games, but ultimately fell short of City’s title-winners, making them the only side to win as many matches and pick up as many points without winning the title.

That squad pipped Middlesbrough's 1996/97 side - who lost both FA and League Cup finals before being deducted points and subsequently facing relegation - to the unwanted award.
