Liverpool and Chelsea qualify for Champions League as Leicester suffer final-day heartbreak

Liverpool and Chelsea have qualified for the Champions League after a dramatic final day in the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp's side did what they needed to do by beating Crystal Palace 2-0 at Anfield, but Chelsea were left thanking fierce rivals Tottenham for a favour.

The Blues were beaten 2-1 at Villa Park leaving their destiny out of their own hands, but Leicester's 4-2 defeat against Spurs meant Brendan Rodgers' side missed out on European football's premier club competition by a solitary point.

It leaves the Foxes in the Europa League, where they join West Ham who secured a sixth-placed finish by beating Southampton 3-0 at the London Stadium.

Tottenham's win meant they finished above Arsenal despite the Gunners' 2-0 victory over Brighton, finishing seventh and qualifying for the inaugural Europa Conference League.

At Anfield, Sadio Mane scored the opener as he prodded home from a corner after touches from Rhys Williams and Roberto Firmino left it on a plate for the Senegalese forward.

Mane made it a brace in the second half to ensure a comfortable afternoon for those Liverpool fans back in the ground on Merseyside.

Jamie Vardy fired Leicester ahead from the penalty spot against Tottenham but Harry Kane levelled for Spurs - a goal which secured the Golden Boot ahead of Mohamed Salah.

Vardy was on target from 12 yards once again after the break to put the Foxes back in front, but an own goal from Kasper Schmeichel and a Gareth Bale brace meant it was heartbreak for Brendan Rodgers' side.

Chelsea paid the price for switching off at a corner allowing Bertrand Traore to find himself in acres of space and he fired Villa ahead.

Anwar El Ghazi doubled the hosts' lead before Ben Chilwell pulled one back for the Blues - but ultimately their result was immaterial to ensuring their place at Europe's top table next term.
