Liverpool Airport security staff jobs to go after coronavirus hits travel

Members of security staff at Liverpool John Lennon Airport are set to lose their jobs following the coronavirus pandemic.

The security staff at Liverpool are employed by aviation security provider Wilson James, and up to half the workers at the airport are thought to be affected by the job cuts.

They come after a huge decline in the amount of passengers passing through the airport because of Covid-19.

In July passenger numbers were down 83% on the previous year, which has had a knock-on effect in security.

A Wilson James spokesperson said : “The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted many industries, particularly aviation. The drastic reduction in flights and supporting airport operations is affecting many organisations and Wilson James is no exception.

"Honesty and communication are core Wilson James values and will continue to guide our actions.

"Our chief priorities at the present time are to continue in open dialog with the airport operator, employee representatives and union partners in a transparent and collaborative manner, and to continue to work with the whole of the Liverpool John Lennon Airport community to provide a quality service to the passengers we serve.”

A spokesman for Liverpool Airport said: "In July we saw passenger numbers down 83% on the previous year, whilst August has been better the overall situation is that we are operating only 50% of the capacity we operated at the same time last year.

"We expect reduced load factors (the percentage of seats filled on a plane) to mean that this year we handle around 30% of the passengers we handled in the previous year.

"This has unfortunately had an understandable knock-on effect in security as our lanes are staffed for much higher numbers of passengers.

"We are working closely with the provider, Wilson James, to find options that minimise the number of job losses at the Airport.”
