Liverpool airport closure hits Liverpool FC fans travelling home from RB Salzburg win

Liverpool FC fans returning from Salzburg are facing disruption to their journey after flights in and out of Liverpool John Lennon airport (JLA) were stopped for the rest of the morning.

Emergency services were called to the airport this morning after a private jet overshot the runway on landing .

The LFC team itself flew out from Liverpool JLA on Monday for their Champions League clash with Salzburg. They returned straight after the match last night and were unaffected by this morning's incident.

However, two scheduled flights from Salzburg were due to return to JLA this morning. The flight due to arrive at 7.50am was diverted to Manchester airport. At this stage it is not known where the second, due to arrive at 1.55pm, will land.

Airport spokesman Robin Tudor said other fans would have boarded flights from JLA to Amstedam and made their way to Salzburg from there.

Liverpool Airport said the private jet at the centre of this morning's incident had three crew and one passenger on board. No one was hurt and there is now an investigation to find out what happened.

The airport is likely to remain shut until early afternoon.
