Liverpool agree contract with goalkeeper as transfer set to complete amidst crisis

Liverpool have agreed a one-year contract with Andy Lonergan.

The veteran goalkeeper is set to sign the deal and will continue to train at Melwood with the first-team ahead of the Reds' upcoming Super Cup match with Chelsea in Istanbul.

The free agent first joined the European champions on their pre-season US tour with a lack of senior goalkeeping options in the squad.

He started against Sevilla and impressed while making his first appearance since featuring for Rochdale against Scunthorpe United in League One back in March.

Lonergan remained with Liverpool for the remainder of pre-season for trips to Edinburgh and Evian, as well as t he Community Shield at Wembley .

The veteran shot-stopped gave an excellent account of himself during his time at the club but Jurgen Klopp ultimately decided against offering him a contract.

And while he remained at Melwood to train last week, his surprise adventure with the Reds appeared to have come to an end.

However, an untimely calf injury suffered by Alisson on the opening day of the season handed Lonergan a reprieve.

Alisson's injury left the Reds with just new boy Adrian as the club's only senior goalkeeper.

Elsewhere, Kamil Grabara is on a season-long loan at Championship side Huddersfield Town, under-18s goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros is recovering from an elbow problem and Caiomhin Kelleher has only just resumed training after a hand injury .

And Former Preston and Leeds goalkeeper Lonergan has now agreed a deal to keep him at the club until next year.

Lonergan is expected to be in Klopp's squad for Wednesday UEFA Super Cup clash with Chelsea in Istanbul.
