Liverpool a riot of colour as Chinese New Year celebrations sweep the city

Liverpool was awash with colour today as Chinese New Year celebrations took place in the city centre.

The city welcomed the Year of the Rat today with vibrant street performances, showcases of traditional and contemporary music, dance and song by Chinese students.

Great George Street and the surrounding areas were taken over by crowds as they arrived to spend the day watching shows and making the most of fairground rides.

Despite the gloomy weather earlier today, the crowds were out in force to see performances from Movema, Pagoda Arts and more.

The firecracker display featuring the lucky man, dragon and unicorn parades drew hundreds to Great George Square where scenes filled with colourful dancing, hypnotic music and dazzling firecrackers took place.

Market stalls lined Great George Street with hundreds visiting to get their hands on souvenirs, while others headed to fairground rides such as the Tropical Dancer or the Ghost Train.
