Liverpool 3 AC Milan legends 2: Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler and Andrea Pirlo roll back the years at Anfield

Steven Gerrard scored a trademark last-minute winner to give Liverpool Legends a 3-2 win over AC Milan in an entertaining charity game at Anfield.

The Reds had led 2-0 after strikes from Robbie Fowler and Djibril Cisse, but a brilliant free-kick from Andrea Pirlo and a smart finish from Giueseppe Pancaro has levelled the scored before Gerrard’s late hit.

A host of stars who played for Liverpool in the remarkable 2005 Champions League final between the two sides were on show in aid of the LFC Founfation, including two goalscorers on that night in Gerrard and Vladimir Smicer.

The visiting Milan contingent also featured many veterans of Istanbul, including former Ballon D’Or winner Kaka, and Italian midfield legends Gennaro Gattuso and Pirlo.

The home side were on top for much of the first half, with Luis Garcia and Dirk Kuyt still full of running on the wings, but it was Fowler who popped up to open the scoring with a delightful outside foot volley from Glen Johnson’s cross.

After a raft of half-time changes, it was two substitutes that combined to double the lead as Patrick Berger fed Cisse to slide home.

Milan were back in the game just after the hour mark when Pirlo curled a sensational free-kick over the wall and thought they’d earned a draw after Pancaro slotted home, but predictably it was Gerrard who had the final say, drilling home off the far post.
