Liverpool 3-2 AC Milan: Jordan Henderson stunner settles topsy-turvy Champions League cracker

Jordan Henderson’s stunning half-volley ensured Liverpool got their Champions League campaign off to a winning start as they beat AC Milan 3-2 in a rollercoaster game at Anfield.

Liverpool took the lead early on in a dominant first-half display but somehow went into the break behind after two goals in as many minutes for the visitors just before the interval. However, Mo Salah, who had earlier missed a penalty, levelled for the Reds before Henderson’s wonderful hit earned all three points.

Jurgen Klopp shuffled his pack following Sunday’s win at Leeds, handing Joe Gomez his first start since returning from injury and giving Divock Origi the chance to lead the line as Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane were rested.

Klopp saw his side take an early lead when Trent Alexander-Arnold’s strike across goal took a nick off Fikayo Tomori and looped in, and the hosts coud have been two to the good soon after when they were awarded a spot-kick after Andy Robertson’s strike flicked a Milan hand but Salah was denied from 12 yards by Mike Maignan.

The Reds missed several good chances to extend their lead before a double-whammy on the stroke of half-time gave the Italians into a scarcely believeble advnatage, Ante Rebic sweeping home at the end of a slick move before Brahim Diaz poked home to render a goalline clearance from Andy Robertson futile.

Salah did find the net soon after the restart, though, found by a wonderful flick from Origi, and it was left to Henderson to win it with his superb effort into the bottom corner, his first Champions League goal since 2014.
