Liverpool 1 Leicester City 1: Reds miss chance to go seven points clear after dropping points at Anfield

Liverpool have missed the chance to go seven points clear of Manchester City after being held to a draw at home by Leicester.

Manchester City’s defeat to Newcastle on Tuesday presented Jurgen Klopp’s side with a chance to take a commanding lead in the Premier League title race.

A draw sees the Reds move five points clear at the top but the Merseysiders will feel a huge opportunity has been missed.

Sadio Mane opened the scoring with Liverpool’s quickest goal of the season, beating Kasper Schmeichel with less than two minutes on the board.

The Senegal international was able to dribble into the box unchallenged after a nervy start from the visitors before side footing into the far corner.

Leicester grew into the contest however and after James Maddison passed up a chance to level the contest, Maguire took his.

Maddison flung in a free kick that followed a clumsy challenge from Andy Robertson with Ben Chillwell getting the vital knock on to the big centre half who applied a striker’s finish at the far post.

The Foxes dicated the second-half from the off but perhaps the game’s defining moment came just before the hour mark.

After exchanging passes with Firmino, Naby Keita burst into the box but as he was about to pull the trigger on goal, Ricardo Pereira appeared to inadvertently stand on the midfielder’s foot.

Liverpool’s appeals for a penalty were turned away by Martin Atkinson however, the villain at Anfield tonight.

Leicester had chances to win the game with Demarai Gray guilty of ignoring his teammate Maddison in a better position after being sprung through on goal.

A late rally from Liverpool wasn't enough with Claude Puel's side defending superbly to see the game out.
