Liverpool 1-2 Manchester United: Harry Maguire header seals vital away win as Reds' crisis continues

Liverpool have suffered a fourth straight defeat across all competitions after being beaten at Anfield by bitter rivals Manchester United on Sunday.

Bryan Mbeumo broke the deadlock after just two minutes as he ran on to Amad Diallo’s pass and squeezed the ball under Giorgi Mamardashvili to give the Red Devils a dream start.

There was some controversy surrounding the goal as Alexis Mac Allister was lying on the ground and clutching his head after being caught by team-mate Virgil van Dijk.

Despite referees being instructed to halt play due to safety measures whenever a player suffers a head injury, Michael Oliver did not stop the game and Mbeumo was allowed to race through and score.

Liverpool pushed for an equaliser and got their reward in the 78th minute when Cody Gakpo turned the ball home from close range.

However, Harry Maguire headed home what turned out to be the winner with seven minutes of normal time remaining as Man Utd held on to secure back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time under Ruben Amorim.

United are now only two points behind their arch-rivals, and Amorim will feel they have turned a corner with possibly the standout result of his reign so far, Arne Slot is left to consider what has gone wrong with his misfiring side.

Liverpool lost a fourth successive match for the first time since November 2014 and a first home league game for 400 days.
