Full-time! Liverpool 1-1 Southampton

That’s it. Liverpool have their first goal under Klopp but it’s now eight draws from their last nine games in all competitions. Southampton remain undefeated on the road this season.

90 min +3: Mane fouls Moreno and is sent off for a needless challenge on Liverpool’s left flank … Liverpool will have one final chance! Fimino flicks Ibe’s delivery on. It’s recycled and Moreno delivers for a second time towards Benteke but the flag is up because Skrtel is offside. That should be that …

90 min +2: Liverpool take the kitchen sink approach. A long ball from Moreno finds Benteke but his header is knocked down to Firmino but he is unable to get a decent shot away. Liverpool do win their 10th corner but it’s cleared by Ward-Prowse.

90 min +1: Pelle is through about 10 yards out after a rapid break down the left but he kicks fresh air!

90 min: There will be four minutes added on!

88 min: That was a sucker punch but having seen the replay, you’ve got to conclude Liverpool could have done a lot more defensively to prevent that from happening. Two headers won without much of a challenge and Mane was left with far too much space at the back stick. There are a lot of bleak expressions in the home end at the moment.

Goal! Liverpool 1-1 Southampton (Mane)

86 min: The free-kick is sent in. Fonte rises to win it on the edge of the area. Ramirez, at the back post, heads the second ball across goal and Mane bundles it in with Mignolet diving.

85 min: Milner fouls Bertrand and becomes the first player to be shown a yellow card here – that’s his fifth of the season and he will be banned for Wednesday’s League Cup fixture against Bournemouth.

85 min: “As a Villa fan, can I just say now how much we’re missing Benteke,” writes Chris Drew. “The difference between relegation or not.” This game has been largely rubbish but his header was worth waiting for. Is it even better than Andy Carroll’s winner for West Ham yesterday?

83 min: Coutinho is replaced by Ibe. The Kop rises and applauds.

80 min: Southampton’s final change sees Ramirez make his first appearance of the season, coming on for Davis.

79 min: Southampton go straight back on the attack. Davis crosses from the right and Pelle rises at the back post under pressure from Clyne but Mignolet saves.

Goal! Liverpool 1-0 Southampton (Benteke)

77 min: And just as it looks like they are fading, Liverpool score! Milner swings in a deep cross from the right but Benteke gets in front of Fonte 12 yards out and buries a sensational header into the top right corner. What a finish!

76 min: Juanmi is on for Clasie, Southampton’s second change.

74 min: Southampton are taking control of the game now. Liverpool are tiring and the Saints are pushing them back.

72 min: On a serious note, it’s not been a vintage day for Premier League football has it? The effort remains high but that’s about it.

71 min: Back in a few, just going to have a nap.

69 min: Moreno shamelessly shoves Davis to the ground but play continues to the bafflement of everybody apart from the referee Andre Marriner. And seconds later Firmino wins a corner. Up come Sakho and Skrtel – the 2015 edition of Liverpool’s SAS.

67 min: Klopp makes his second change: Lallana is off, Firmino is on. What an awful barnet the new man has.

64 min: Koeman shuffles the Saints’ pack, bringing Ward-Prowse on for Tadic.

63 min: Coutinho picks out Lallana’s run between Bertrand and Van Dijk but Bertrand puts him off sufficiently and he shoots narrowly wide.

60 min: Fonte gets on to Tadic’s corner and the ball heads goalwards but there are a few bodies on the line. Van Dijk is one of them and he is flagged offside.

58 min: Moreno is in a good position again, fed by Coutinho but he puts his cross high into the Kop. Klopp applauds but that’s abysmal from the left wing back.

56 min: Moreno smashes a ball across goal from a tight angle with Lallana on the six yard line. There is way too much pace on the ball. Moreno has not been particularly good today.

53 min: Van Dijk and Fonte come up for a free-kick but Davis plays it short to Tadic, who then crosses from the left but Skrtel heads it away.

50 mins: Much better from Liverpool. Moreno and Lallana have a neat exchange but the former is offside when trying to find Milner, who was lurking ominously.

48 min: Another corner for Liverpool and Benteke gets away from Fonte to shoot. It’s deflected for another corner. Milner’s effort is put back out for another corner and the fourth in about 90 seconds is eventually cleared.

47 min: Lallana drives menacingly forward and gets away from Davis. He passes to Benteke but Van Dijk is across to cover the angle. He concedes a corner which is cleared.

Peep!

46 min: Liverpool restart and Benteke has replaced an ineffective Origi.

Hello Alan, and after having doggedly followed every minute of the mostly turgid United v City match I find myself doing the same here. Do I a) deserve a medal or b) send the bill to Guardian towers or c) go out for a walk only to jam-side down miss five goals before full time? writes Michael Cosgrove.

I’d go with c.

Half-time! Liverpool 0-0 Southampton

It’s been dull. Lots of running, hardly any quality football.

45 min: Just a minute of stoppage time. Phew!

45 min: Who else is looking forward to half-time?

40 min: Lallana tees up Moreno on his left after the wing back sneaks behind a dozing Tadic. With piles of space and time, he blasts way over first time. Poor. That’s been the best chance so far.

39 min: Tadic puts in a delightful cross from the right. Van Dijk heads it at the backpost but Lucas is there to clear the danger.

37 min: Southampton look strong on the left in attack, causing their former player Clyne some bother. Mane cuts in but Tadic gets in his way and find himself in possession instead. He gives it to Bertrand and his low cross is saved by Mignolet at the near post.

35 min: Wanyama is down again after a bit of contact with Milner. Free-kick but nothing more.

33 min: This is a bit better from Liverpool. Coutinho picks out Lallana but the England international’s touch is a little heavy so instead of taking it on himself he lays it off to Milner. His attempt is blocked.

32 min: Liverpool have had seven attempts but only one on target. Lots of effort, little quality – but is that not the story from a lot of Premier League games this season?

31 min: No, because Wanyama has taken to the ground with an injury and we have a break in play.

30 min: At last a chance. Milner plays a one-two with Lallana but shoots a little wide. Klopp is encouraged and applauds the attempt. Will that be enough to spark this game into life?

29 min: Coutinho is fed up of lots of running and effort, so decides to shoot from quite a bit out. Fonte blocks it.

28 min: Van Dijk collects a loose pass from Milner and picks out Pelle, who dropped deep. He then tries to set away Mané but the Southampton No10 is flagged for offside.

Updated

25 min: It’s not been great, really. Southampton remain happy to sit back and play on the break. And if Klopp broke some wind you could probably hear it on the Kop such is the lack of atmosphere.

21 min: Plus it’s hard to think where Liverpool’s goals can come from with Sturridge in the stands and Benteke on the bench. Origi just does not appear to be in tune with those behind him – so far.

17 min: Pretty even so far. Liverpool have had a little more possession but Southampton appear largely tight in defence and will be very dangerous on the break. Considering Liverpool played on Thursday night, will they tire late on?

15 min: The atmosphere is eerily silent at Anfield. The visiting supporters are chanting “Ground full of tourists.”

14 min: Some neat play between Tadic and Pelle, with the striker turning Sakho easily, ends with Skrtel coming across to beat away the Italian’s attempt.

12 min: Another Southampton corner is met by the head of Fonte at the near post but he cannot direct it on target.

10 min: Skrtel hits a dreamy long pass towards Coutinho and the little Brazilian is almost away until Van Dijk comes across to cut it out.

8 min: Lallana turns Bertrand very easily but shoots tamely at Stekelenburg from 25 yards. The Southampton fans cheer their former player’s inability to threaten.

6 min: Can stops a threatening attack from Tadic and feeds Origi in midfield. He is fouled by Wanyama with the game very stretched for one that is only six minutes old.

5 min: And seconds later, Southampton win their first corner off Lucas. Davis puts it in but Sakho heads clear.

4 min: Liverpool win the game’s first corner. It’s taken towards Can at the near post but his right-footed clip is wide.

2 min: Tadic crosses from the left towards Pellè but the Italy striker wanted it a little earlier and Mignolet collects.

Peep!

1 min: Southampton gets us going in their green away strip, playing from left to right as we watch it. Liverpool in all red, unsurprisingly.

Here come the teams! The Kop is awash with flags, they are singing along to some kinda song. And we are moments away from kick-off.

Updated

Are you excited? I am. This certainly couldn’t be any worse than the Manchester derby, which did not have a shot on target until the 82nd minute.
