Liverpool extended their winless pre-season run to four games as they were convincingly beaten by Napoli on Sunday afternoon.
The Reds produced one of their poorest performances of the summer in front of 65,000 people at Murrayfield as they went down to a deserved 3-0 defeat.
Jurgen Klopp now has just one more friendly - against Lyon in Geneva on Wednesday - before his side’s Community Shield meeting with Manchester City at Wembley, and he will have plenty to work on in the intervening period if this showing is anything to go by.
How the German will relish having both Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino back in the fold for that fixture after such a toothless display in Edinburgh.
Though it most likely did not feel like that in the opening moments of this game, as Divock Origi went close with less than five minutes on the clock.
The Belgian met a pinpoint Andy Robertson cross from the left inside the Napoli box, but was almost too deft in his finish, which bobbled past the far post.
And that was about as close as Liverpool came across the entire 90 minutes, all while their opponents threatened regularly on the counter.
The Italians’ first came courtesy of that mode of attack when Lorenzo Insigne broke away down the left before cutting inside Joel Matip and arrowing a shot into the far corner.
And it was two for Carlo Ancelotti’s team before the half-hour mark as Arkadiusz Milik poked a dangerous Insigne cross from the left-hand side beyond a despairing Simon Mignolet.
The Reds continued to struggle with Napoli’s threat on the break and were perhaps fortunate to trail by just two by the half-time interval.
But, despite an improved start to the second half from Klopp’s men, their opponents had a third just eight minutes after the restart.
Once again, Insigne was heavily involved, cutting in off the left and shooting at Mignolet, who could only palm the ball to Amin Younes for an easy tap-in.
A raft of second-half substitutions - including a Liverpool debut for Harvey Elliott - did little for either side’s fluency as the game wore on, meaning the final half-hour saw little threat to the scoreline.
That meant Klopp was left with another worrying pre-season result to consider at full-time of a game that brings them ever closer to the start of the new campaign.
