We need to talk about Bruno ... Fernandes

By Andrew McGarry

It 's hard to be disappointed when you score the only two goals of the game, but Bruno Fernandes is probably still filthy right now for missing out on a hat-trick after his magnificent performance for Portugal.

His first was an accident, and doubtless Cristiano fans will swear blind he got a glance to it in the air on the way in.

But there was no arguing with the second, a nerveless penalty that left Sergio Rochet floundering.

Even after that there were two more cracking chances - a shot from wide right that was turned around the post, and a drive from the edge of the box that cannoned off the post.

Regardless, Fernandes showed his best on the world stage tonight - and as we have said, no one will want to face Portugal now.

Portugal looking dangerous at this World Cup

By Andrew McGarry

Uruguay will go away from this match with some frustration and regret, but Portugal were ruthless when they needed to be and got the job done.

The most important takeaway from this is that the Portguese are a dangerous outfit, and not just because of CR7.

The likes of Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and William Carvalho in midfield, and Ronaldo and Joao Felix up front make this an attacking side that will cause problems for whoever they face in the knockout stages.

FT: Portugal beats Uruguay 2-0

By Andrew McGarry

Key Event

We've gone more than 10 minutes of added time, but now that's it! The referee blows his whistle and the game ends, with Portugal advancing to the round of 16 with a 2-0 win.

It will be a hard road ahead now for Uruguay to make it through.

Portugal playing out time

By Andrew McGarry

Portugal are an experienced side, even without CR7 on the pitch - and they are running out the clock like professionals here.

Now they are away again, a cross from the left to the far post is met by Bruno Fernandes, but his shot is saved for a corner and he misses out on a hat-trick!

This corner ends up in a goal kick.

And now another attack ends with Fernandes hitting the post! He is furious at himself for missing out again.

There are still five minutes left in added time

By Andrew McGarry

Let's not be too hasty - there are nine minutes all up and only four have elapsed, but this would need a miracle for a comeback for Uruguay.

Bruno Fernandes scores - it's 2-0 to Portugal!

By Andrew McGarry

Key Event

Now Fernandes is stepping up to the spot - he's the normal penalty taker and even more so with Cristiano off.

Can he finish it? HE CAN. It's 2-0, and barring miracles Portugal are off to the round of 16.

Fair to say the Uruguay fans are NOT happy with that decision.

Was there a handball?

By Andrew McGarry

Portugal went forward there, and Bruno Fernandes was screaming at the referee for a penalty for handball by Jose-Maria Gimenez.

Nothing was given, but replays show there was.

Now they are looking at it again - and VAR is getting involved!

It's a penalty!!!

Time running out for Uruguay

By Andrew McGarry

We are three minutes away from the end of the 90 minutes, but who knows how much added time will be given with all the stoppages, including the injury to Ruben Neves.

Can Uruguay find something?

Triple change for Portugal

By Andrew McGarry

It's Joao Felix, Cristiano Ronaldo and William Carvalho off for Portugal, and Matheus Nunes, Goncalo Ramos and Joao Palhinha on.

10 minutes left - can Uruguay grab an equaliser against Portugal?

By Andrew McGarry

This is much more like it for Uruguay - they are going forward and putting the blowtorch to Portugal. So far things have held, but it could break.

Now Uruguay have a corner on the right - but it's not good and Portugal clears.

Another chance for Uruguay!

By Andrew McGarry

They are looking so much better - now  they break down the right, and a great ball puts in de Arrascaeta, but he fluffs it with a tame shot rather than a scoop like the one that changed the game for Cameroon earlier tonight.

Luis Suarez putting pressure on Portugal

By Andrew McGarry

Suarez is putting himself about and he draws another foul from Joao Felix, who picks up a yellow card for his trouble.

It's a free kick on the left, which de Arrascueta takes. He swings it in to the box, and Suarez traps it but can't quite get his leg around it - his shot goes wide.

Portugal need to be alert here!

Uruguay go close!

By Andrew McGarry

You get the sense that Rodrigo Bentancur remains the key to Uruguay chances. When he gets the ball, things start to happen - but La Celeste need to get the final ball right.

And now they've hit the post! That was a cracking shot from Maxi Gomez that hit the woodwork. A big scare for Portugal!

What's going on here?

By Andrew McGarry

After a lot of chat and puzzled looks, Uruguay go ahead and make a double change, with Luis Suarez and Maxi Gomez on for Edinson Cavani and Darwin Nunez.

It's end to end now

By Andrew McGarry

Portugal has brought on young gun Rafael Leao for Ruben Neves, and he is immediately into the play at one end.

Now the attacks are flowing at both ends - there's no time for tapping it around at the minute.

Portugal stop a Uruguay attack, as we can see Luis Suarez waiting to come on at pitchside. Strap yourselves in, it's going to be a fiery last 20 minutes!

The big moment for Portugal

More on the pitch invasion

By Andrew McGarry

Play was stopped momentarily as someone in the crowd stormed the pitch in protest a little earlier.

Waving a rainbow flag and wearing a "Save Ukraine" T-shirt, the pitch invader was caught on television cameras before the shot quickly panned to the crowd.

The crowd was cheering the invader on as he evaded security for a time, before being caught and taken from the pitch.

Uruguay change it up

By Andrew McGarry

They have brought off defender Diego Godin for Facundo Pellestri, and Mathias Vecino is off for attacking midfielder Giorgian de Arrascaeta, who proved dangerous for Uruguay in the South American World Cup qualifiers.
