As it happened: Canberra hits major vaccine milestone

Canberra has reached a major vaccination milestone, with the territory exceeding 90 per cent fully vaccinated today.

It puts Canberra at the front of the nation for vaccination rates with local authorities eyeing minor changes to the territory's tracing and quarantine rules.

COVID testing numbers in the capital were low across the weekend and Monday, as authorities reminded the community of the need to be vigilant.

The government postponed yesterday's regular Tuesday update so it could mark the milestone.

Changes to the territory's quarantine processes were also announced on Wednesday, with close contacts required to isolate for just seven days rather than 14, and casual contacts will not be required to quarantine at all.

We are also getting closer to another easing of restrictions. The ACT's pathway forward from lockdown, released last week, said face masks would not be required outdoors from Friday, and 10 visitors would be allowed in homes and outdoor gatherings of 30 people.

The changes will also allow cinemas, theatres, performance venues, galleries, museums and outdoor attractions to reopen with density restrictions.

The ACT recorded 10 new cases in the 24 hours to 8pm on Tuesday. There are 11 people hospitalised with the virus, six of whom are in intensive care, with five requiring ventilation. The new cases bring the active total to 280, while the number of cases associated with this outbreak now stands at 1617.
